Orris felt himself grow cold suddenly, as if a winter wind had swept

through the corridors beneath the Nal. He's been interested in

Tobyn-Ser... ."He sounds like someone I should meet," Orris agreed. "I

am glad you think so." She turned to Gwilym and said something to him.

The Bearer shook his head, but Melyor repeated what she had told him and

indicated Orris with a nod of her head. They spoke a short while longer.

"Your friend does not want you to meet with him," Melyor said, turning

to Orris. "He fears for your life." "Should he?"

She hesitated. "I understand why he feels that way." "That's not what I

mage asked her.

She shrugged slightly. "I told him a secret that could get me killed if

anyone else found out about it."

"Sounds interesting. Care to tell me?"

A smile flitted across her face. "I do not think you would understand

right now. It is enough to say that your friend and I share a special

bond that has something to do with that stone he carries." "I see,"

Orris said. "Would I be wrong in thinking then that you and I share a

bond of sorts as well?"

The color abruptly vanished from Melyor's cheeks and she gazed at the

mage for a long time. "No," she finally answered in a small voice. "You

The first of the outlanders'attacks on Tobyn-Ser took place just over

five years ago at a small town on the Lower Horn called Valani. Like

most of the early incidents that would follow, it seemed rather

innocuous--a few homes were
